A sculpture of a hippo made from a mini cooper

A trip down memory lane! The year 1993, the starting point – a mini cooper.

a sculpture of a hippo made from a mini cooper

A friend recently reminded about one of my wilder projects, back in 1993 – converting a mini into a hippo.

Donated as a rebuild/challenge project by Adrian, I don’t think he envisaged seeing his former pride and joy transformed into a hippo.  Exhibited in London at the Mall Galleries, Oxfordshire and Lancashire, she travelled up and down the M6 several times, not under her own steam but kindly assisted by the RAC (turning heads as she went).

Bespoke Cycling Trophies

Trophies for Clitheroe Grand Prix

A stainless steel trophy for a cycling event. For the  first time in 10 years, Friday 3rd June saw Clitheroe Town centre transformed into a race circuit.  It was a tough course complete with hills and potholes.  Richard Paige at the Green Jersey commissioned me to make the trophies for the three races.  Although very fiddly, I loved making them and  was pleased with the results.

Making the Gallowglass Warrior

4 metre high Gallowglass Warrior sculpture on N5 Ballaghaderreen Bypass, Co Roscommon

Gallowglass Warrior on N5 Ballaghaderreen Bypass, Co Roscommon

For the last few months the workshop has been dominated by the 4 metre high Warrior.  This is my second collaborative project with artist Paul Regan who came up with the original concept.  The design evolved into what is now the Gallowglass Warrior.  The Gallowglass were a class of elite mercenary fighters who came from Scotland between the 13th -16th centuries to fight for Irish chieftains .  The name Gallowglass comes from the Irish gall óglaigh which means foreign warriors. Five such warriors settled along the river near Ballaghaderreen.

Scale model for a public art sculptureAs ever building my large sculptures starts with a maquette(scale model).  I then create a framework which will work like a skeleton to give strength.  I then use sheet stainless cut into strips to describe the muscles and clothing.   I have worked on the sculpture with it lying down, periodically lifting it to an upright position to check that it’s right.  building a metal sculpture

The sword was made by one of the blacksmiths at Trapp forge and is 3 metres long. Last week the sculpture left the workshop on its journey to its new home in Ireland.  It was installed on the N5 Ballaghaderreen bypass , Co Roscommon, Ireland.  Thanks to the fantastic group of guys that helped to install him.

Greg Rutherford receives model of Clare Bigger's sculpture Leaping Man

The real” Leaping Man”

8.5m stainless steel sculpture based on Olympic Gold winning long jumper Greg Rutherford

Leaping Man, Milton Keynes

Just under three and a half years ago, I was approached to design and make a sculpture which was to be based on long jumper Greg Rutherford.  Milton Keynes born and bred, he had recently won gold in the 2012 Olympic Games.  I was so pleased to be asked as i am particularly interested in sport.  I set about making a scale model which won the approval of the council.  A little over a year later, I got the go ahead to proceed. It was installed on Fen roundabout in Milton Keynes in June 2014.

This week Greg Rutherford was presented with a small version of that sculpture by Milton Keynes Council in recognition of his continuing success at the top of his game.  I was very pleased to at last get an opportunity to meet this inspirational athlete.

I have recently been honored to be commissioned by Manchester United Disabled Supporters Association (MUDSA)  to make a trophy to be presented to Sir Alex Ferguson.  This is to mark 25 years of MUDSA and Sir Alex Ferguson’s support over that time.  My aim was to portray this inspiring group of people and their love of football.  Pictured above is Sir Alex Ferguson CBE with Phil Downs MBE of MUDSA.
