Italian Wolf commission

This year I was lucky enough to be commissioned to make an Italian Wolf.  These beautiful creatures, also known as the Apennine Wolf ,are slightly smaller than their grey cousins and are native to the Italian peninsular but can also be found in Switzerland and France. This one will be making its way to its new home in Italy this week.  Buon Viaggio

The Sculpture Show @ Curwen Gallery – A sneak preview of sculptures that I’ll be showing

Curwen Gallery’s Sculpture show runs from 2nd – 25th February 2017. Twelve sculptors will be showing their latest work.  Here’s a sneak preview of mine.

A trip down memory lane! The year 1993, the starting point – a mini.

A friend recently reminded about one of my wilder projects, back in 1993 – converting a mini into a hippo.

Donated as a rebuild/challenge project by Adrian, i don’t think he envisaged seeing his former pride and joy transformed into a hippo.  Exhibited in London at the Mall Galleries, Oxfordshire and Lancashire, she traveled up and down the M6 several times, not under her own steam but kindly assisted by the RAC (turning heads as she went).

Trophies for Clitheroe Grand Prix

Clitheroe Grand prix trophyFor the  first time in 10 years, Friday 3rd June saw Clitheroe Town centre transformed into a race circuit.  It was a tough course complete with hills and potholes.  Richard Paige at the Green Jersey commissioned me to make the trophies for the three races.  Although very fiddly, I loved making them and  was pleased with the results.

Making the Gallowglass Warrior

4 metre high Gallowglass Warrior on N5 Ballaghaderreen Bypass, Co Roscommon

Gallowglass Warrior on N5 Ballaghaderreen Bypass, Co Roscommon

For the last few months the workshop has been dominated by the 4 metre high Warrior.  This is my second collaborative project with artist Paul Regan who came up with the original concept.  The design evolved into what is now the Gallowglass Warrior.  The Gallowglass were a class of elite mercenary fighters who came from Scotland between the 13th -16th centuries to fight for Irish chieftains .  The name Gallowglass comes from the Irish gall óglaigh which means foreign warriors. Five such warriors settled along the river near Ballaghaderreen.

Gallowglass maquette and frameworkAs ever building my large sculptures starts with a maquette(scale model).  I then create a framework which will work like a skeleton to give strength.  I then use sheet stainless cut into strips to describe the muscles and clothing.   I have worked on the sculpture with it lying down, periodically lifting it to an upright position to check that it’s right.  building of gallowglass warrior 1

The sword was made by one of the blacksmiths at Trapp forge and is 3 metres long.Last week the sculpture left the workshop on its journey home.  It was installed on the N5 Ballaghaderreen bypass , Co Roscommon, Ireland.  Thanks to the fantastic group of guys that helped to install him.

I recently completed and installed a new commissioned garden piece.  I’ve been so pleased with the result of having the disk mirror polished.  It adds an extra dimension to the sculpture with the added reflections from around the garden.  Can’t wait to see the garden finished too.
