Travellers into Wigan from the M6 will soon be greeted by a stunning and beautiful new sculpture in stainless steel called The Spirit of Wigan - on the Landgate Roundabout at Bryn (off Junction 25 of the M6).
The 'Spirit' was created by artist Clare Bigger and depicts a central archway with three figures representing the strength and optimism of the borough's spirit. It will stand 10 metres high and will be illuminated at night to give a stunning effect.
The Environment Partnership (TEP) has secured significant sponsorship from Wigan-based betting giant Totesport.
Council Cabinet Member for the Environment Cllr David Molyneux said: "This is a exciting project which will provide visitors to the borough with a magnificent welcome. The design is a glimpse of the future but it also builds on the borough's proud traditions and industrial heritage. The Spirit of Wigan will give us a new landmark and a great new image to move the borough forward into the future."
